SORRENTO 50th ANNIVERSARY

2008 will be Sorrento’s 50th Anniversary. A special committee has been established to ensure that this event is marked with a true celebration of our history. We need the help of all members in providing memorabilia, stories and photos of the past 50 years. Please hunt through your old photos, trophies and even bathers for parts of our history and bring them into the office. All photos will be scanned and returned ASAP and all items will be catalogued to ensure their return to their owner.

WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECKS & NATIONAL POLICE CLEARANCES

The Department for Community Development is implementing a Government strategy to protect children from harm. All people who work or are involved in any activities that involve children under the age of 18 are required to apply for a Working with Children Check. This check only applies to those parents and volunteers who are aged 18 years and over.

Parents and volunteers who have a child under the age of 18 in Surf Lifesaving are exempt from needing a check. Under the guidelines of the SLSWA Member Screening Policy , these parents are required to apply for a Volunteer National Police Check

Parents and volunteers that do not have a child under the age of 18 in Surf Lifesaving and are involved in activities that involve children are required to apply for a Working with Children Check. The application booklet is available from your Age Manager or the office and has all the instructions on what to do and how to apply.

PRAISE FOR OUR LIFE SAVERS

I was at the Marmion Angling and Aquatic Club yesterday morning after gathering my Abalone when a person left the water with a very bad cut to the fore arm his friends were asking for assistance, as the MAAC had a very basic first aide kit available I called to the two SSLC members further up the beach

A few whistles and hand waving bought the pair to the scene I gave quick explanation of the trouble

The two young SSLC members took immediate control of the situation It is refreshing to see such young people act as they did

Your club should be very proud of your members and their achievements the SSLSC are equipping these youth with more that the surf skills these youth will become fine citizens and an asset our community

We here to much about the bad things young people get involved in and not enough of the great young people and what they are doing
